A Physician’s Guide to QCT BMD Testing
نویسنده
چکیده
Quantitative Computed Tomography or “QCT” is a fast, non-invasive bone mineral density (BMD) exam of the lumbar spine or proximal femur, which utilizes low dose scan protocols on a standard Computed Tomography (CT) scanner. Originally developed in the early 80’s, QCT has several advantages over Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) for the measurement of BMD in patients with degenerative disease and arthritis but was superseded by DXA early on, primarily due to the high cost and limited availability of early CT scanners.

A Physician’s Guide to QCT BMD Testing
Today, QCT is one of three methods, including DXA, cited by the National Osteoporosis Foundation as safe and effective for the evaluation of BMD[3]. The QCT system comprises a CT scanner calibration device and a software application on a standalone Windows PC networked to the CT scanner. At the hip, QCT produces BMD T-Score measurements that are clinically equivalent to DXA measurements[5], but...

The aim of this study was to assess the measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) by quantitative computed tomography (QCT), comparing the relationships of BMD between QCT and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and between QCT and radiographic absorptiometry (RA) in the metacarpal bone of Holstein dairy cows (n=27). A significant positive correlation was found between QCT and DXA measuremen...
متن کاملExperimental investigation of bone mineral density in Thoroughbreds using quantitative computed tomography
Bone mineral density (BMD) is one of the indications of the strength and health. BMD measured by quantitative computed tomography (QCT) was compared with that measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and radiographic bone aluminum equivalence (RBAE). Limbs were removed from horses that had been euthanized for reasons not associated with this study. Sixteen limbs (left and right metaca...
متن کاملEfficacy of Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry for Evaluation of Biomechanical Properties: Bone Mineral Density and Actual Bone Strength
INTRODUCTION Bone mineral density (BMD) is an important index in diagnosis of osteoporosis and other metabolic bone diseases, prediction of fractures, and monitoring treatment. This study was to find a more feasible technique for prediction of osteoporotic fracture between dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and quantitative computed tomography (QCT) and to reveal the actual change of bone s...
متن کاملMineral Density in Beagle Dogs: Comparison with Dual-energy X-ray
25 This study aimed to demonstrate the higher accuracy and reproducibility of quantitative 26 computed tomography (QCT) compared with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) as a gold 27 standard for measuring canine bone mineral density (BMD). Seven middle-aged beagle dogs 28 underwent lumbar vertebral and bilateral femoral DXA and QCT scans. BMD (mg/cm) was 29 measured at the vertebral body fr...
